The Mojito. Every one has heard of it, some don’t know what it is, others can’t say properly, but the fact remains that the Mojito is one damn fine rum cocktail!
My favourite Mojitos are made at the Elysium lounge by local cocktail maker Sambo. Just don’t ask him to show you his bag of up and coming tricks or you might be there for a while.
Although my favourite Mojitos are made with Havana Club Anejo Blanco, Sambo makes them with the Mt Gay Rum - Eclipse, thens whacks in some weird solidified honey and a tonne of mint and lime, smashes them all together with a muddler, throws in a heap of craushed ice, gives it a good shake and tops it all up with some soda water! Mmmm, I’m getting thirsty just thinking about it!
There are so many variations on how to make Mojitos, I guess everyone’s taste is slightly different. I have included one way to make a mojito below:
Scrape together:
60ml of your favourite Rum ( I recommend Havana Club Anejo Blanco)
3 big spoons raw sugar
3 wedges of lime
12 mint leaves
Crushed ice
Soda water to suit
Muddle (I prefer the term Mash) the sugar, lime and most of the mint leaves together in a glass / cocktail shaker. Add the rum, 3/4 fill the glass with crushed ice and mix. Pour into a pretty glass, top up with soda water, clap remaining mint leaves between your hands (if anyone’s watching it will scare them and you’ll laugh) and place on top. Serve with or without straw, depending how manly / girly you are feeling and enjoy your Mojito!
If you’d like to see mojito making in action, here’s a great video from Bacardi!
Well this story was just too good not to mention! Only in Australia would a story like this unfold… while stopping on the side of the road to “relieve” himself during a long journey through the bush on his way home from a pig hunting expedition, a man was “swiped” by a deadly brown snake!
The startled man said he must have just about sat on the snakes head as he squatted in the bushes!
The man who “thought he was gone” used a cold Rum can to soothe the pain while he rang his mother to say a final goodbye!
His mate drove him to the hospital where he was treated and survived, (all thanks to the Rum of course). If there wasn’t enough good reasons to be a fan of rum before, there sure is another one now!
The Appleton Estate V/X holds some special sentimental value to me. The smooth blended taste of the Jamaican rum always reminds me of the first bottle I tried. You see I didn’t buy this bottle, it was given to me as a present for my birthday by a special lady who has since become a very important person in my life.
Knowing that I loved rum and that I had been trying some different varieties, she decided to go out on a limb and buy a bottle for me, not knowing anything about rum at all, and aren’t I glad she did!
This cornerstone in the Appleton Estate range of Jamaican rums is thoroughly enjoyable, even the ladies enjoy it outside of a cocktail, well I know of at least one! It’s not too rich and not too potent, it’s smooth, flavoursome and is very easy to drink. I’ve tried on the rocks, with soda or with dry ginger, each putting their own unique twist on the rum but still maintaining that unmistakeable appleton taste!
I have about 100mls left in my bottle of Appleton Estate V/X, just enough for the two of us to enjoy again some time, I just can’t bring myself to drink it without her.
Matusalem Platino Rum or Ron Matusalem is my new favourite rum! It was a long, hard battle with Mt Gay, but for the moment the Platino has come out on top! It’s hard to descibe why, Mt Gay is like my old friend I’ve known for years, where as Platino is like the fun new guy with all the cool stuff, fast cars, big screen tv’s… you know what I mean!
Origionally founded in Cuba and now produced in the Dominican Republic, the crisp “snappy” flavour of Matusalem Platino is what I like the most, good in a tall glass - its refreshing, light and very easy to drink (a little too easy as it turns out!). Only problem is it seems to be hard to come by in local bars in Adelaide, and those that do have it really need to educate their staff members! twice in one night (I only went to two bars) I had to actually point out the bottle before they knew which drink I wanted… “a little to the left, the clear bottle with the cool engraving on it, no… that’s Johnny Walker…past that…” you get the idea.
The other thing I like about this rum, as I just mentioned, is its bottle! It’s real pretty. With a pretty swallow bird on it. Very nice and has a cool cork instead of a skrew cap! But back to the rum, it is described on the Matusalem website as “unique blend of triple distilled, hand crafted spirits…” all I know is it tastes really good and if you haven’t already, you should go try it right now!
So I’m off tonight to go get myself a nice new bottle of Matusalem Platino and hope to share my new friend with my existing ones and also that Mt Gay doesn’t get too jealous and try to knock him off the shelf!
