The Rum Diary Movie
I was very excited to learn today (I’m a bit behind the times is seems) that Johnny Depp is to star in the film adaption of Hunter S Thompson’s book – The Rum Diary.
The book, which was written in Puerto Rico in the 1959, was originally canned by Thompson after a series of publisher knock backs, but was brought back to life in 1998 and became a national best seller. Depp apparently filmed the movie in 2009 which is set to be released in 2011 – should be a good one to watch!
There are few video collaborations of set photos on YouTube, buy no official trailer as yet.
From the books blurb:
‘The Rum Diary was begun in 1959 by then twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson. It was his first novel, and he told his friend, the author William Kennedy, that The Rum Diary would “in a twisted way . . . do for San Juan what Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises did for Paris.” ‘
If you want can’t wait for the The Rum Diary movie to come out next year, you should read the book, check out Amazon.com for new and used copies. Enjoy!

UPDATE: The trailer is out!!
I actually watched a bit of a documentary on H S Thompson the other night, and Depp was voicing Thompson’s words. Depp must be fascinated in his life because he has done a number of things about him now. One can’t quite forget the craziness of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”
Hi Rhys, there are also quite a few youtube videos of Johnny Depp reading out letters from and to Hunter S Thompson, may be a similar thing. He’s a great actor, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was difinately one to remember – you can almost draw some parallels from this charater to Captain Jack Sparrow! 😉
